Akumal is one of the Riviera Maya's best-kept secrets. It’s a fishermen’s village that has not changed much over the years, keeping the charm and authenticity of a Mexican coastal town and a laid-back feel. The bay is famous for its sandy beaches, vibrant marine life, and turtle population. Grab a nice breakfast at Turtle Bay Café and Bakery, or sit on the beach at Lol Ha Restaurant, an excellent stop before starting your day. From here, you can easily go for a swim, snorkel, or hop on a boat and go diving.
Across from the beach, around the small center, some restaurants and souvenir shops display local handicrafts, jewels, and art, while La Cueva del Pescador awaits you for incredible seafood and shrimp stuffed avocados.
Half Moon Bay boasts calm waters and a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. It’s a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts who can decide to swim on the reef to enjoy the beautiful Yalku Lagoon and its mangrove setting.
After an active day, you can stop at La Buena Vida, a true Akumal legend with an unbeatable vibe, and sip a Margarita or enjoy a seafood menu with your feet in the sand. For a fancy dinner, check out La Lunita, an excellent beachfront restaurant, or go back to Lol Ha for live music and some tropical drinks. For a taste of local life, across the highway, Akumal town offers multiple taco stands and small local restaurants that are worth a try.
Akumal nightlife is very relaxed and intimate compared to its neighboring cities, but this is its perk: a breezy atmosphere, ocean views, and uncrowded bars. And if you like silence, take a walk on the beach, enjoy the starry sky, and during the Summer season, if you are lucky, you might even witness baby sea turtles hatching.
