By midday, the sidewalks take on a boutique feel. Shop owners set out displays of clothing, jewelry, and artisan pieces for the home, while lunch aromas drift from local favorites like La Taqueria and La Norteña, with Billy Bob’s keeping the grill going.

As evening arrives, La Veleta leans into its signature atmosphere. Jungle Jax fires up a chef-owned kitchen in a garden setting, Asian Bodega brings bold flavors, and La Pizzine and Canova heat their ovens, while Veleta Market buzzes with choices.

After dinner, the music takes over, from Tuesday nights at Raum to weekend DJ sets at Veleta Market, and late nights at Mera Room.

After nearly 23 years living in the Mexican Caribbean and raising my family here, I still remember the early days when we spent many weekends along the Tulum coastline. At that time, the area was simple and very natural, with small beachfront hotels and very little development. It was just the ocean, the jungle, and a quiet stretch of Caribbean shoreline. I feel fortunate to have experienced Tulum during that time.

Over the years, both my family and the region have grown. Today the Tulum hotel zone has developed into one of the most unique destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Ancient Mayan ruins, cenotes, jungle landscapes, international cuisine, and creative design all come together in one place.

What continues to draw people to Tulum is the experience itself. The beaches are known for their white sand and turquoise water, and the atmosphere combines nature, culture, food, and wellness in a way that few destinations can match.

Even after decades here, standing on the shoreline and looking out across the Caribbean still reminds me why this place became so special to so many people.

Region 15 is the part of Tulum that still feels like the actual jungle, the essence of what most people come here looking for. I love how you can be driving through pure greenery, thinking, “Where on earth are we going?”, and then, suddenly, like a mushroom appearing out of nowhere, a beautiful project rises from the trees. Developers here usually keep at least 30% of the area green, and the quality of construction is impressive, especially in boutique projects. It’s also the fastest-growing area of Tulum right now.

Some of my favorite spots are inside Region 15, like Bodhi Tulum, one of the most conscious and eco-friendly developments in the area. Rubi Hotel is another place I love with a fantastic restaurant, a great cocktail bar, and a perfect day-pass spot to relax. Right nearby, you’ll find the Tulum Paddle Social Club tucked into the jungle and, next door, Los Morros, which has some of the best seafood in Tulum.

Life here feels peaceful and close to nature. Most owners and guests are foreigners seeking short-term rentals, and the real estate market is a mix of high-end eco-luxury condos, boutique projects, and an increasing number of Tulum-style villas.
